Las Vegas – Maurice Washington, a 45-year-old corrections officer at the Las Vegas city jail, has been charged with DUI resulting in death and failure to stop at the scene of a fatal crash following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The charges stem from an incident that took place around 3:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning.

According to reports, Washington was driving north on Decatur Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he struck 58-year-old Elijah Givens, who was crossing Decatur at Alta Drive. Givens was reportedly crossing against a pedestrian signal when Washington, who had a green light, collided with him. Following the crash, Washington fled the scene but later returned, during which law enforcement observed signs of impairment.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department subsequently arrested Washington upon his return to the scene. Initially, Washington’s bail was set at $250,000. However, he posted bond and was released from custody. His release includes conditions of electronic monitoring as well as controlled substance monitoring.

During his appearance before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Joseph Bonaventure, the severity of the charges against Washington was emphasized. The court provided Washington with a period of 30 days to secure legal representation as he prepares for his defense. His next court hearing is scheduled for June 11.

Legal Context

The legal implications of DUI cases resulting in death can be severe, with potential penalties including substantial prison time, hefty fines, and a lasting impact on a person’s professional and personal life.
