Families enjoying a summer festival in Las Vegas

News Summary

Students in the Clark County School District celebrated the end of the school year with community activities and summer programs aimed at keeping them engaged. This summer, free meal services and reading challenges will be offered to children under 18, while various community events and entertainment options are planned for families. Highlights include a kickoff for the ‘Move Your Way’ fitness campaign and concerts over the Memorial Day weekend, enriching children’s and families’ summer experience in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas – Students in the Clark County School District (CCSD) celebrated the final day of the school year on Friday, marking the beginning of summer break with various community activities and festivities designed to keep children engaged and active during the warmer months. The weather forecast predicted a mostly sunny day with windy conditions, including gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

This summer, several initiatives have been launched to support children and teens under the age of 18. The CCSD introduced a summer food service program that will provide free meals at various locations across the community. Families can locate nearby meal sites by texting “Summer Meals” to 914-342-7744. Again, the Library District’s annual summer challenge program will run until July 31, offering free reading activities for all ages, encouraging literacy while school is out.

Additionally, a kickoff event for the “Move Your Way” campaign took place at the Henderson Multi-Gen Activity Pool, which included complimentary pool parties aimed at promoting fitness within the community. The Southern Nevada Health District noted the importance of these initiatives due to rising sedentary lifestyles among children.

As the weekend unfolds, various events and activities are set to take place. The Las Vegas Aces will host their home opener against the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. The team currently holds a record of 1-1 after an early loss and a recent victory against the Connecticut Sun. Aces’ home games will now be broadcasted on Vegas 43, bringing more local excitement to basketball fans.

With Memorial Day approaching, the forecast indicates less wind and expected highs in the mid to upper 90s. Community members can participate in a Memorial Day event on May 26 at Cornerstone Park, which aims to honor fallen soldiers by displaying over 500 flags in tribute.

Additional family-friendly events are also scheduled throughout the weekend. The Springs Preserve will host an event focused on Nevada’s endangered plants and animals, offering free admission for members. There’s also a family-friendly hugging event planned at Calico Basin Road Red Springs on Sunday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those interested in an entertaining evening can attend a magic and mixology event at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest, featuring magician Mac King, with ticket prices set at $100.

For music lovers, several major clubs in Las Vegas will host concerts and DJ performances over the Memorial Day weekend, including acts such as Steve Aoki and The Chainsmokers. Furthermore, the Fremont Street Bar Crawl will offer free entry to various venues along Fremont Street.

Families looking for budget-friendly entertainment can enjoy summer movie deals starting June 2, where various theaters will screen kid-friendly films at prices ranging from $1.50 to $2. Additionally, free outdoor movie screenings will occur at several parks throughout Nevada, starting at dusk, and West Wind Drive-in will offer $6 general admission family nights every Tuesday.

The final bell ringing in CCSD not only signals the end of the school year but also opens the door to countless summer activities and events aimed at enriching the lives of children and families within the Las Vegas community.
