Las Vegas, NV – Communities In Schools of Southern Nevada is gearing up to launch its 13th annual “Fill the Bus” school supply drive, aimed at supporting students of the Clark County School District in preparation for the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. The initiative is designed to alleviate the financial strain on families facing economic hardships, as the demand for school supplies continues to rise.
This year, the organization aims to serve over 70,000 students across more than 80 K-12 schools throughout Clark County. However, the increased demand has prompted Communities In Schools to issue a call for essential donations and financial contributions. The challenges of chronic absenteeism in schools further highlight the urgent need for resources to support students’ educational journeys.
To facilitate the collection of supplies, two drop-off locations will be open for community donations on July 24. The first location is the Sam’s Club parking lot at S. Rainbow and the 215 Beltway, which will accept donations from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second location will be at the NV Energy parking lot on W. Sahara Ave, open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community members are encouraged to participate and help provide critical supplies for students.
As the first day of school approaches on Monday, August 11, families are feeling the financial strain associated with back-to-school preparations. A recent national survey revealed that parents are planning to reduce their back-to-school spending this year, with average expenditures expected to reach $741—an increase of $200 from the previous year. Approximately 56% of parents report feeling financial stress, leading them to establish stricter budgets and seek out more affordable shopping options, including thrift stores.
In addition to the “Fill the Bus” initiative, various events are planned to assist families in need. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be providing free dental care to children at the Ronald McDonald House, located near Sahara and Decatur, regardless of their insurance status. On August 1, the Nevada Treasury is hosting a back-to-school fair at Rancho High School, where families can receive free backpacks and lunchboxes while supplies last. This event will also feature a raffle with over $1,000 in prizes and information about 529 college savings accounts.
The Clark County School District, in collaboration with Cox Communications, will organize back-to-school fairs over four weekends, commencing on July 19, 2025. These fairs will serve as additional resources for students and families, providing an opportunity for community engagement and support.
As the back-to-school season draws near, key preparation steps are essential for parents and students. This includes planning for clothing, school supplies, and establishing healthy routines to foster a successful academic year. While the Clark County School District offers necessary supplies for all students, families are welcome to contribute additional items as needed. Teachers may share specific supply lists to guide parents on what items to provide.
Common school supply essentials include writing instruments, organizational tools, art supplies, and backpacks. With many families feeling the financial burden, budget-friendly shopping options are encouraged to help manage back-to-school expenses effectively.
In addition to broader school supply drives, community-led initiatives are also in the works to assist children in foster care. A supply drive is currently underway, collecting items such as notebooks, backpacks, and shoes, and will continue until July 25. These efforts aim to ensure that every child in the community receives the support they need to start the new school year successfully.
