Curacao store providing assistance to Latino families

News Summary

Curacao, Nevada’s only department store catering to Latino communities, has started an Essential Assistance Program to support families anxious about ICE activities. The program provides essential items like appliances and groceries to help those facing heightened fears, as customer visits decline due to safety concerns. Community advocates emphasize the broader impact of this climate of fear on everyday tasks for both documented and undocumented families. Curacao’s initiative reinforces its commitment to assisting the local Latino community during these challenging times.

Las Vegas – Curacao, the only department store in Nevada dedicated to serving Latino communities, has initiated an Essential Assistance Program to support local families facing heightened fears surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity. The store has experienced a decline in customer visits, particularly in June, attributed to increased anxiety among the Latino population regarding potential ICE raids in public spaces.

Approximately 40 households in the Las Vegas area have already utilized the confidential assistance program, which provides essential items such as microwaves, compact fridges, small appliances, and televisions at no cost. This initiative is part of a broader movement, as hundreds of additional families in other states have benefited from similar support offered by Curacao.

In addition to appliances, Curacao is now offering limited grocery support, which includes fundamental items like flour, sugar, instant coffee, rice, and beans. This enhancement aims to address the immediate needs of families grappling with the fears that have disrupted their ability to work and shop safely. Many customers have reported feeling unsafe venturing out, with some relying on children to assist with necessary errands.

The growing apprehension among the Latino community regarding ICE actions has not only affected foot traffic at Curacao but has also rippled out to other companies that cater to Latino clientele. Coca-Cola and Constellation Brands have noted similar decreases in spending among their customers. George Weston, the CEO of Associated British Foods, mentioned a recession-like atmosphere that is significantly impacting Hispanic consumers.

ICE can carry out raids in public places without a warrant; however, access to private properties, including Curacao, requires consent. To ensure customers feel secure, Curacao has posted signs indicating that the premises are private property accessible only to cardholders.

While the store’s overall customer traffic has decreased, there are indications that foot traffic is starting to pick up, especially later in the day. This shift might suggest that families are finding perceived safety during off-peak hours. Nevertheless, the climate of fear remains a pervasive issue that touches not only the undocumented population but also U.S. citizens in the community, impacting their daily lives and mobility.

Community advocates have pointed out that this environment of anxiety affects everyone in the area, making simple tasks like shopping or traveling to work more complicated and frightening. The launch of Curacao’s Essential Assistance Program is viewed as a critical support mechanism aimed at stabilizing livelihoods amid these challenging circumstances.

Customers can apply for assistance through the program directly on Curacao’s website, connecting families with essential resources in a time of need. By stepping up to provide these services, Curacao is reinforcing its commitment to the Latino community and attempting to ease the burdens caused by the current national climate surrounding immigration and enforcement issues.
