News Summary

WAVR, a Las Vegas-based startup, has launched innovative atmospheric water harvesting technology that converts air into drinkable water. Originating from UNLV research, this technology aims to tackle the water scarcity crisis in Southern Nevada. The hydrogel membrane used in their prototypes is inspired by tree frogs, and with significant funding secured, WAVR plans to scale its applications for sustainable drinking water production. The company envisions generating thousands of gallons of water daily, with a focus on renewable energy integration and collaboration with local organizations for pilot projects.

Las Vegas – WAVR, a startup based in Las Vegas, has developed groundbreaking atmospheric water harvesting technology that transforms air into potable water. Officially launched in 2024 from a research laboratory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the company aims to address acute water scarcity challenges in Southern Nevada. With successful prototypes and extensive research completed over the past three years, WAVR’s innovative solution may soon provide a sustainable source of drinking water for communities facing dwindling resources.

WAVR’s Chief Technology Officer revealed that the company has created a foundational demonstration of its technology. Utilizing a specialized 3D printer, WAVR has produced prototypes that feature a key component: a hydrogel membrane. This membrane is highly absorbent, allowing it to attract moisture from the atmosphere, and is inspired by the water-collecting abilities of tree frogs. The hydrogel membrane has been likened to a contact lens or grains of rice, emphasizing its unique texture and functionality.

The research team is currently in the process of testing and refining the technology, working toward scaling it for practical applications. With $4 million secured in seed funding from private donors along with a partnership with Nevada’s State-Sponsored Venture Capital Program, Battle Born Venture, WAVR plans to expand its research and development (R&D) team, advance pilot projects that can yield hundreds to thousands of gallons of water per day, and establish a robust patent portfolio.

WAVR’s ultimate goal is to develop practical applications for drinking water production within the next decade, with the manufacturing process expected to take place in Las Vegas. The startup is positioned to contribute significantly to solving water scarcity issues prevalent in Southern Nevada, a region where river and aquifer supplies are insufficient to support continuing growth.

Len Jessup, founder of Desert Forge Ventures, noted that Las Vegas is home to a strong startup ecosystem, ranked among the top five in the country. This environment fosters innovation and collaboration, particularly for technologies aimed at sustainable water solutions. WAVR’s advancements are aligned with other similar efforts in the region, notably from researchers at UNLV who are also developing atmospheric water harvesting systems.

One such researcher, Jeremy Cho, is exploring methods to collect water vapor in arid environments using a combination of lithium bromide and hydrogel membranes. His studies indicate that the atmosphere over Clark County contains sufficient moisture to meet the daily water needs of the county’s population, presenting opportunities for negligible environmental impact through water harvesting methods that effectively skim water from the air.

Rich Sloan, co-founder of WAVR, emphasized the practicality of this technology for communities suffering from water scarcity. The startup envisions creating devices that can generate water not only for residential use but also during outdoor activities and other applications. To support these initiatives, WAVR is collaborating with WaterStart, a nonprofit focused on sustainable water solutions, to test pilot projects incorporating atmospheric water generators in Las Vegas.

WAVR’s innovative designs aim to produce up to 10,000 gallons of water daily and can be energized by renewable sources. Their technology is also intended to integrate water harvesting with dehumidification and various applications across different industries.

As WAVR moves forward with its ambitious plans, the success of its atmospheric water harvesting technology could offer a vital lifeline to communities confronting the persistent challenges of water scarcity in the region. With the combination of extensive research, cutting-edge design, and a commitment to innovation, WAVR is positioned to be a key player in the future of sustainable water solutions.
