The community is left to mourn the loss and grapple with the consequences as families affected seek support.

Las Vegas – A tragic incident on Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane has resulted in the death of an unborn child and left multiple individuals severely injured. The crash, which occurred just before 2:30 p.m., involved a total of four vehicles and is believed to have been caused by a driver running a red light while another vehicle was making a left turn on a green light.

Maximiliano Chavez, 27, has been arrested and faces serious charges, including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) resulting in death, DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, and multiple counts of reckless driving resulting in death or injury. Chavez had a prior DUI arrest in 2021 along with two failures to appear in court. Following the incident, he admitted to consuming three alcoholic drinks and using marijuana.

The crash had devastating consequences: an unborn child died after emergency surgery was performed on a pregnant woman involved in the incident. Additionally, a juvenile is currently facing life-threatening injuries, including a fractured skull and brain bleed. An adult passenger involved in the crash is also hospitalized with critical injuries. In total, 17 individuals were affected by the collision, with four people requiring hospitalization. While two of these individuals sustained life-threatening injuries, the other two are reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.

At the hearing following his arrest, Judge Amy Ferreira expressed concerns regarding Chavez’s risk of flight and set his bail at $250,000. Along with bail, Chavez has been ordered to undergo high-level electronic monitoring and is prohibited from driving, consuming alcohol, or possessing any alcoholic beverages. He is also required to wear an alcohol monitoring device. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 9.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) stated that their investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the area surrounding the incident was closed for several hours to facilitate investigative efforts.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding DUI incidents in the area, as this is not Chavez’s first encounter with the law regarding driving under the influence. Such repeat offenses bring attention to the need for public awareness and stricter enforcement of DUI laws to prevent future tragedies.

Reports indicate that the LVMPD’s investigation will examine the full details of the crash, including the actions of both drivers involved. Given previous cases of DUI-related incidents, local authorities are likely to face scrutiny regarding existing safety measures in place to prevent impaired driving.

As the city mourns the loss of the unborn child and supports those who have been injured, families affected by this tragic event are left grappling with the consequences of this devastating crash. The community is reminded of the dangers posed by impaired driving and the need for responsible behavior on the road.
