Las Vegas – Two disturbing incidents of animal cruelty have surfaced in Las Vegas, raising alarms about the treatment of pets in the area. The first incident involved a 4-month-old puppy found stabbed and killed in a dumpster, while the second case highlighted a Chihuahua thrown into a dumpster by an unidentified man.

Puppy Stabbed and Discarded

On September 15, 2024, a 4-month-old puppy was found “beaten and bleeding” in a dumpster at an apartment complex near Rainbow Boulevard and Sunset Road. A Clark County Animal Protection Services officer was dispatched to the scene and discovered the puppy in poor condition and not breathing. Subsequent investigation revealed that the puppy had been microchipped, and the previous owner confirmed that he had re-homed the puppy to Shuntiera Tyler just a day prior.

Tyler is now facing charges after being indicted by a Clark County grand jury for cruelty to animals. According to reports, Tyler claimed she had given the puppy to another person, stating she couldn’t keep it in her apartment. However, surveillance footage did not support her account, as it failed to capture her vehicle during the time frame she provided. Notably, the puppy was discarded in the dumpster just nine minutes after Tyler claimed to have re-homed it.

Tyler, who had been arrested previously in February, had a bail set at $20,000, which prohibited her from owning any animals. Her case was dismissed in justice court after the grand jury indictment. She is slated to appear in court on May 20.

Chihuahua Thrown in Dumpster

In a separate but equally alarming incident, a Chihuahua named Atreyu was rescued from a dumpster in Las Vegas after being discarded by an unidentified man on April 14, 2025. The entire event was captured on home surveillance video, which showed the man dangling Atreyu by his legs before tossing him into the dumpster.

Atreyu spent over 24 hours trapped in the dumpster before being rescued. Fortunately, he emerged unharmed but exhibited signs of being skittish. The Vegas Pet Rescue Project has taken Atreyu into their care and is collaborating with Animal Protective Services to identify the person responsible for this act of cruelty.

Related Case: Another Chihuahua in Peril

In a related incident, a man named Alexis Flores, 30, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after being caught on surveillance video throwing his Chihuahua, Marley, into a dumpster. Flores admitted to discarding the dog in frustration, claiming that he struggled to manage Marley’s behavior. He asserted that he did not intend to kill the dog, describing Marley as annoying and frustrating.

Flores now faces three counts of willful and malicious torture of an animal, with a probable cause review scheduled for a later date after he posted bond.

Ongoing Concerns

These two cases of animal cruelty have sparked significant concern among residents and animal advocacy groups in Las Vegas. They highlight the continuing issue of animal abuse and the urgent need for effective measures to protect pets from mistreatment. As investigations proceed, the community remains vigilant and hopeful that justice will be served for Atreyu, Marley, and other animals facing similar fates.
