Crossing guards play a vital role in ensuring the safety of students as they commute to school.
Clark County schools in Las Vegas are organizing crossing guard hiring events throughout July to recruit 75 additional crossing guards for the 2025-26 school year. With classes starting on August 11, the need for more crossing guards is urgent to ensure student safety. The initiative, recognized by local officials, includes a background check and offers $17 per hour. Recent expansions have improved student safety, and parents are advocating for crossing guards at high schools. Interested candidates are encouraged to attend the hiring events at local libraries.
Las Vegas – Clark County schools are hosting a series of crossing guard hiring events throughout July in preparation for the 2025-26 school year. These events, organized by the Crossing Guard Company, a part of All City Management Services, specifically aim to recruit crossing guards for the Las Vegas Valley.
Classes for the Clark County School District (CCSD) will commence on Monday, August 11, prompting the urgent need for 75 additional crossing guards to enhance student safety as they travel to and from school.
Crossing guards serve as a vital first line of defense for vulnerable road users, including school children, providing essential guidance and peace of mind for parents and teachers. Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft has acknowledged the significant role that crossing guards play in safeguarding children in their daily commutes.
Recent expansions in crossing guard services have been implemented, with approvals from Clark County commissioners to include middle schools starting in 2024. The initiative currently covers 25 middle schools and 101 elementary schools in the area, although there are ongoing discussions among parents and community leaders advocating for the assignment of crossing guards to all high schools as well.
To apply for the crossing guard positions, candidates must meet several requirements. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old and must provide a government-issued ID along with a second form of identification, such as a social security card or birth certificate. Candidates will also undergo a background check, fingerprinting, and a pre-employment drug test.
The pay for crossing guard positions is set at $17 per hour. Last year, the district saw notable improvements in safety following the addition of crossing guards at middle schools, leading to significant reductions in student-related crashes; elementary school-related crashes declined by 64%, while middle school-related crashes saw a decrease of 69%. High school-related crashes also fell by 13%, demonstrating the positive impact crossing guards have on student safety.
The City of Las Vegas previously initiated a pilot program to test the effectiveness of crossing guards but has yet to allocate funding for additional crossing guard positions. Currently, Clark County employs 1,298 crossing guards and is working to address attrition rates and replace those who are no longer available.
Details regarding the hiring events include specific dates and times, which will take place at various libraries throughout the Las Vegas area. Interested individuals are encouraged to participate in these events to ensure that adequate crossing guard coverage is available for the upcoming school year.
As the school year draws closer, motorists are reminded to observe safety measures in school zones, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to protecting the community’s children as they navigate their daily routes to and from school.
