Las Vegas: 78-Year-Old Woman Dies After July Hit-and-Run Crash Involving Suspected DUI Driver

A 78-year-old woman has tragically died following injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash involving a driver suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) in Las Vegas. The incident occurred on July 3, 2025, at approximately 7:15 PM at the intersection of Mountain Vista and Rawhide Streets in southeast Las Vegas.

According to initial reports, the collision involved two vehicles: a 2003 GMC Yukon and a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata was stopped at a stop sign on eastbound Rawhide Street when it attempted to turn left into the intersection. As it did so, the GMC Yukon drove south on Mountain Vista and collided with the left side of the Hyundai.

The elderly woman, who was driving the Hyundai Sonata, suffered severe injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital by medical personnel. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on August 6, 2025.

Following the crash, the driver of the GMC Yukon, identified as 41-year-old Carlos Lee, fled the scene on foot. However, he later returned to the accident site, where he displayed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested by the police. Lee faces multiple charges, including DUI, reckless driving resulting in death or serious bodily harm, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

After being arrested, Carlos Lee posted bond on July 8 and is scheduled to appear in court on September 30, 2025. Due to the timing of the woman’s death, which occurred beyond the state’s 30-day reporting window for traffic-related fatalities, her death will not be categorized as a traffic-related fatality.

Details of the Incident

The crash highlights concerns regarding impaired driving and the tragic consequences that can result from such reckless behavior. As investigations continue, authorities emphasize the importance of accountability and safety on the roads.

This incident is particularly notable as it underscores the severe implications of DUI offenses. Both the Las Vegas community and law enforcement agencies remain focused on addressing these issues to ensure safer driving conditions for everyone.

Context on DUI Incidents

DUI offenses have been a persistent issue in Las Vegas, as in many cities across the United States. Law enforcement continues to work diligently to enforce DUI laws and take measures to prevent impaired driving. Awareness and education campaigns are also crucial in reminding drivers of the dangers associated with alcohol consumption and driving.

The lifecycle of DUI incidents often involves complex legal and emotional ramifications for all parties involved, especially when they result in injury or loss of life. In this case, the community reflects on a tragic outcome that has resulted from a preventable act.

As the local court prepares for Lee’s upcoming hearing, it serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with operating a motor vehicle and the grave consequences that can arise from neglecting these responsibilities.
