I-15 Lane Closures Announced for Widening Projects

News Summary

The Nevada Department of Transportation has released an updated schedule for lane closures on Interstate 15 due to significant widening and infrastructure work. Motorists should be aware of reduced lanes in both directions, with peak travel times expected to see increased congestion. Ongoing work includes overnight closures for LED sign installations, with additional modifications to local roads. NDOT collaborates with Waze to keep drivers informed about changes and encourage the use of alternate routes to avoid delays.

Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced an updated schedule for lane closures on Interstate 15 (I-15) due to ongoing widening and infrastructure projects. These restrictions are essential for profile grinding and lighting upgrades, which are preparatory steps for planned paving operations. Motorists traveling through these work zones should proceed with caution and consider using alternate detour routes to avoid delays.

The lane closures will affect both northbound and southbound traffic on I-15. Specifically, southbound traffic will be reduced to three lanes between Warm Springs Road and Blue Diamond Road. Similarly, northbound traffic will also see a reduction to three lanes from Silverado Ranch Boulevard to Blue Diamond Road. In these areas, auxiliary lanes will remain closed, increasing congestion during peak travel times.

NDOT’s ongoing work is set to continue around the clock and is projected to last until July 2025. As part of these operations, overnight closures are scheduled from December 4-6 to accommodate the installation of LED traffic management signs. I-15 will be fully closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on both nights, which could significantly affect late-night and early-morning commuters.

In addition to the lane reductions on I-15, drivers should take note of further modifications occurring on local roads. From June 1 through July 1, Tropicana Avenue will be limited to two lanes in each direction between Polaris Avenue and Valley View Boulevard. Moreover, Fort Apache Road will be reduced to one through lane in each direction from 9 p.m. on June 1 until 4:30 p.m. on June 6.

Additional overnight closures will take place on June 4, affecting both the Tropicana on-ramp to southbound I-15 and the southbound collector-distributor road to Russell/I-215 westbound. These closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During the nights of June 15, 16, and 17, the Harmon on-ramp to southbound I-15 and the northbound off-ramp to Harmon Avenue will also be closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

NDOT is collaborating with Waze to enhance public awareness regarding planned highway restrictions and closures. This partnership aims to provide real-time updates to drivers, allowing them to adjust their travel plans accordingly. Motorists are urged to stay informed about ongoing updates and advisories to minimize disruption to their travel routines during this period.

The substantial widening project on I-15 is part of a broader initiative to enhance the region’s infrastructure. This initiative began with the construction of the Peace Way bridge project in June 2024, illustrating a long-term commitment to improving traffic flow and safety on one of Nevada’s busiest highways.

In summary, heavy traffic and multiple lane restrictions are expected on I-15 and surrounding roads due to ongoing construction throughout the next two years. Drivers are advised to prepare for potential delays and to explore alternate routes where possible. Continued work is crucial in advancing the improvements needed to accommodate growing traffic demands in Las Vegas.
