Construction work on I-15 in Las Vegas with lane reductions

News Summary

Las Vegas is undergoing overnight lane reductions on northbound I-15 from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. as part of the NDOT I-15 South Widening Project. These closures started on July 27 and will continue through August 1. Motorists are advised to remain cautious, as the construction activities may lead to increased congestion and traffic delays. Additional construction work on I-215 is also anticipated, further impacting traffic flow. The Marathon Work Weekend, from August 1 to 3, will involve substantial lane reductions.

Las Vegas Begins Overnight Lane Reductions on I-15

Las Vegas has initiated overnight lane reductions on northbound I-15, which began on July 27, 2025. This construction project is set to continue nightly through August 1, 2025, with lane closures taking place from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. These closures are part of the ongoing Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) I-15 South Widening Project, aimed at improving road conditions and traffic flow.

Construction Details and Timeline

The nightly lane closures are necessary for several construction activities, including profile grinding, asphalt milling, loop detector installation, and paving. Along with these primary activities, additional lane reductions went into effect on July 29, 2025, specifically between Blue Diamond Road and Warm Springs Road. The eastbound Blue Diamond Road flyover ramp to northbound I-15 is also closed during the same overnight hours.

A significant phase of construction termed the “Marathon Work Weekend” will commence on August 1, 2025, starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding on August 3, 2025. During this period, drivers should expect substantial lane reductions.

Impact on Motorists

Motorists using the I-15 corridor are advised to stay alert and exercise caution in work zones. It is important for drivers to follow posted signage to navigate through the construction areas effectively. The current construction work on I-15 is expected to continue around the clock through August 2025, which may lead to increased congestion during peak travel times.

In addition to the I-15 project, NDOT has announced preservation work starting on a four-mile segment of Interstate 215, from the I-15 interchange to Windmill Lane. This additional work is anticipated to create further impacts in the I-215 corridor.

Previous and Upcoming Closures

Prior to the current closures, there was a significant paving and striping closure on northbound I-15 from Russell Road to Flamingo Road scheduled from July 11 at 9:00 p.m. to July 14 at 5:00 a.m., which affected multiple ramps. Additionally, a separate closure for southbound I-15 is set to take place between Spring Mountain Road and Tropicana Avenue from July 18 at 9:00 p.m. to July 21 at 5:00 a.m. Motorists affected by these closures are encouraged to utilize available detours.

Future Upgrades and Long-term Plans

The ongoing I-15 Tropicana Interchange project, valued at $382 million, is nearing completion and features extensive upgrades to improve traffic flow. Key enhancements under this project include the construction of wider ramps, additional travel lanes, and new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) interchanges.

Looking ahead, NDOT is also planning future upgrades to I-15 between Flamingo Road and Sahara Avenue, for which an environmental study is currently underway. It is important to note that all scheduled closures and construction works are contingent upon weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances. NDOT is working diligently to minimize disruptions to motorists as construction continues.

As the situation develops, stakeholders and commuters are encouraged to remain informed about changes to schedules and projected impacts on traffic flow.
