Lane Closures on I-15 as Tropicana Interchange Project Nears Completion

News Summary

The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced overnight lane closures on I-15 this week to facilitate essential striping work as part of the Tropicana Interchange Project. Southbound I-15 will be closed between Flamingo and Russell roads, followed by northbound lane closures later in the week. The project aims to improve traffic safety and flow, enhancing the overall commuting experience.

Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced overnight lane closures on I-15 this week as part of the final steps of the significant I-15 and Tropicana Interchange Project. The closures are scheduled to facilitate essential striping work, improving traffic flow and safety in the area.

Southbound I-15 will be shut down between Flamingo and Russell roads starting at 9 p.m. on May 14, 2025, and will remain closed until 5 a.m. on May 15, 2025. Following this, northbound I-15 will be closed between the 215 Beltway and Flamingo Road from 9 p.m. on May 15, 2025, to 5 a.m. on May 16, 2025. All lanes on I-15 are expected to reopen fully by Friday morning, May 16, 2025.

The timing of these closures is particularly notable due to the coinciding events, including Game 5 of the Golden Knights playoff series, which could lead to added traffic challenges for fans. To ease the congestion during this time, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-15 will be temporarily opened to all drivers until paving and final striping work are entirely completed later in summer 2025.

Additionally, crews will be working on installing vehicle detection loops on freeway ramps. This innovation is aimed at enhancing congestion monitoring and improving traffic management in the area.

The overall I-15 and Tropicana Interchange Project has been a major undertaking since its launch in 2022, with a total investment of $382 million. The project focuses on enhancing roadway capacity and improving traffic safety, with features including the demolition of the Tropicana bridge for raising and widening, the addition of a Harmon high-occupancy vehicle half-interchange, restructured layouts at Dean Martin Drive, and the removal of the Tropicana and Dean Martin intersection. These improvements are projected to effectively reduce congestion on the freeway, returning five lanes in each direction for the first time in many years.

Additional work on Tropicana Avenue, particularly west of I-15, is also slated to be completed later this summer. This project includes widening efforts between Valley View Boulevard and Polaris Avenue, contributing further to making the roads safer and more efficient for commuters.

Transportation authorities have emphasized that the completion of this project is particularly timely in light of the upcoming Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) festival, which is expected to attract numerous attendees and increase travel in the area.
