A collection of various Labubu plush dolls arranged in a Pop Mart store

News Summary

The recent opening of a Pop Mart store in Downtown Summerlin drew huge crowds of collectors eager for the Labubu plush dolls. These whimsical, elf-like creations have become a fashion statement, with dedicated enthusiasts waiting hours to secure their dolls. Originally launched in 2015 by Kasing Lung, Labubus have surged in popularity through social media virality and collaborations with major brands. Concerns over counterfeit versions have arisen, but the excitement surrounding Labubus showcases a thriving community in Las Vegas, proving the collectible’s growing cultural significance.

Las Vegas – Hundreds of enthusiastic collectors formed long lines at the opening of the new Pop Mart store in Downtown Summerlin on July 12, showcasing the rising popularity of the collectible plush doll known as Labubu. The line wrapped around the shopping center as eager patrons awaited the release of this unique item, demonstrating the growing trend for these whimsical dolls in Las Vegas.

Labubus, which are elf-like plush dolls, have captured the attention of many individuals who enjoy incorporating them into their fashion choices. They are often seen adorning bags, belt loops, or lanyards, symbolizing personal expression among fans. Collectors have taken the trend to heart, with some customers like Justin Gladden waiting in line since 11 p.m. the night before the release to secure their coveted dolls.

Originally crafted in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubus were inspired by Nordic mythology as seen in a picture book titled The Monsters. In 2019, Pop Mart began selling Labubus as exclusive collectible items, propelling them into the public eye. The company’s innovative blind box sales model, where customers buy sealed packages containing mystery figurines, has contributed significantly to the popularity of these plush dolls.

Labubus come in various sizes, colors, and attire, with collaborations featuring recognizable brands such as Coca-Cola and anime series like One Piece. The blind box series, which includes collections like Have a Seat, Exciting Macaron, and Big into Energy, keeps collectors engaged, particularly with the inclusion of coveted secret designs. The odds of finding a normal design in a blind box are approximately 1-in-6, whereas the ‘secret’ designs are much more rare, with a probability of 1-in-72.

From 2024 onwards, Labubu has gained global recognition, significantly bolstered by celebrity endorsements, including mentions from K-pop star Lisa of Blackpink and music icon Rihanna. This recognition has fueled demand and has led fans to customize their Labubus, using outfits and accessories that make them distinct and fashion-forward.

Peyton Cromer, who runs a Labubu customization business named Miss C Collective, spearheads a local Facebook group dedicated to Labubu trading, which has amassed nearly 2,000 members. Cromer, who owns over 20 Labubu items, has raised concerns about the increase in thefts, prompting her to use replicas for safety. Ryan Lim, another enthusiast, hosts trading events, underscoring the community’s growing interest and fostering a culture of self-expression through these collectibles.

Collectors demonstrate excitement as they search for Labubus in-store, especially since stock has become increasingly limited. The average price for a Labubu blind box keychain is around $27.99, while exclusive items can be priced as high as $150. Meanwhile, resellers have begun capitalizing on the popularity of Labubus, with certain variants and secret designs selling for up to $400 in various Facebook groups.

Tourists have also begun flocking to Las Vegas in search of Labubus, with some coming from as far as California and nearby Pahrump. Local stores like One Of Us Comics in Henderson are starting to stock Labubus to meet the surging demand intensified by social media virality. The unboxing experience associated with blind boxes encourages fans to share their finds online, further enhancing the collectibility and excitement surrounding these dolls.

However, with the rising popularity of Labubus comes the concern over counterfeit versions, often referred to as Lafufus or Chafufus. This has prompted collectors to be vigilant and check for authenticity in packaging. For enthusiasts, Labubus are not only toys but also fashion statements, intertwining aesthetics with novelty, cementing their position in fashion culture.

Las Vegas is quickly becoming a hub for Labubu collectors, with Pop Mart’s three locations and additional resale outlets catering to this fervent community. The ongoing excitement and dedication to Labubus reflect a cultural phenomenon that continues to grow in the region.
