Las Vegas Inaugurates New Civic Center and Carolyn G. Goodman Plaza

Las Vegas has officially opened its new Civic Center and Carolyn G. Goodman Plaza, marking a significant addition to the city’s downtown area. The grand opening ceremony took place on Thursday, with a ribbon-cutting event hosted to celebrate the launch of the $190 million development.

Located at 525 S. Main St., the Civic Center spans an entire city block and features two distinct buildings that provide a combined space of 249,205 square feet. The larger building rises five stories and covers 176,982 square feet, while the smaller structure is four stories tall, with a footprint of 72,223 square feet. This expansive facility will house two restaurants along with an art gallery designed to enrich the community’s cultural landscape.

The surrounding plaza is named in honor of former Mayor Carolyn Goodman and is intended to serve as a dynamic space for festivals and performances. Enhancing the public experience, the venue will feature various events, including an exciting free outdoor concert by Jessica Manalo, a contestant from the popular show “The Voice,” set for September 4.

Grand Opening Celebration

A more extensive grand opening celebration is planned for Saturday, September 20, offering the community a day filled with live music, food vendors, and locally produced alcoholic beverages from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 200 families who attend this inaugural event will receive a free blanket, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and low-back chairs for comfort.

For those planning to attend, parking will be available at the nearby 500 S. Main St. parking garage.

Future Events and Collaborations

Following the initial concert, the plaza will host a series of performances, including a show by local group ‘Paige and The Overtones’ on September 18, as well as a ‘Meet the Artists’ event on September 19. Additionally, the Civic Center’s art gallery plans to collaborate with both the Las Vegas Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with an expected debut in October, showcasing public artworks by prominent local artists such as Tim Bavington, Chris Bauder, and Erik Beehn.

The Civic Center and Carolyn G. Goodman Plaza are envisioned as focal points for community culture and public expression, offering opportunities for local artistry and engagement. Designed by LGA Architecture in partnership with BNIM, with foundational work completed by CORE Construction, this project represents a modern chapter in the city’s ongoing development.

With the integration of community activities, dining options, and artistic displays, the new Civic Center is set to become a cornerstone of public life in Las Vegas, promising to enhance the city’s vibrant culture and serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
