The Las Vegas Valley is preparing for a weekend filled with events celebrating Juneteenth and cultural heritage. From a flag-raising ceremony to various community gatherings, the festivities aim to honor freedom, artistry, and unity. The highlight is the Juneteenth Festival, featuring performances, a summer block party, and film screenings that engage the community in celebrating their rich heritage. With free admission to many activities, these events will bring together families and individuals for a memorable experience that underscores the significance of Juneteenth.
The Las Vegas Valley is set to host a range of exciting events from June 20 to June 22, 2023, culminating in the 24th annual Juneteenth Festival on June 21. The festival will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Expo at World Market Center and is intended to celebrate freedom and culture while marking the end of slavery in the United States. Admission and parking for the festival is free, making it accessible to all community members.
Celebrations will begin on June 19 with multiple events across the area. The day will kick off with a Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony at Liberty Park from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Furthermore, AREA15 will host a celebration from 12 to 7 p.m., and Windmill Library will feature “Step Into Jazz: Celebrating Black History Through Music” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. In the evening, a Juneteenth Open Mic event is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Also taking place that day is the Juneteenth Pool Party Celebration at Prentiss Walker Memorial Park & Pool, running from 1 to 4 p.m., and the Juneteenth Festival at Water Street Plaza from 6 to 9 p.m.
In addition to the Juneteenth Festival on June 21, a summer block party hosted by the City of Henderson will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wells Outdoor Pool, featuring free live music, games, and activities focused on water safety. Concurrently, Henderson City Hall will host the opening reception for “Juneteenth in the Present: An Art Exhibition,” which will be available for public viewing through July 20 during standard business hours.
On June 21, North Las Vegas will screen the animated movie “Finding Nemo” at Silver Mesa Activity Pool from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for a distinctive admission fee of $2. Additionally, Craig Ranch Regional Park is set to host the Movies Beats and Eats community event featuring a free showing of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” with music starting at 6:30 p.m. and the film projected about 15 to 30 minutes after sunset.
Capping off the festivities on June 21, Grammy-nominated singer Robin Thicke will perform a free concert at the Fremont Street Experience at 9 p.m.
The Nevada Women’s Film Festival will mark its 11th anniversary from June 20 to 22, showcasing 47 films directed by and focusing on women. Ticket prices start at $12 per screening block and provide an opportunity to engage with female narratives in film. On the same date, a documentary screening of “Big Fight in Little Chinatown” will take place at Desert Breeze Community Center, followed by a roundtable discussion, organized by the UNLV Neon Pacific Initiative.
For those in Pahrump, an outdoor movie series will feature the film “If” at Ian Deutch Memorial Park at dusk, around 8:15 p.m.
