News Summary

Las Vegas is bracing for extreme heat as temperatures are projected to approach 110° this week, prompting an Extreme Heat Warning. Residents are urged to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, especially as temperatures may reach 120° in Death Valley. As the Fourth of July approaches, weather patterns may disrupt travel plans due to potential thunderstorms linked to an incoming cold front. With a history of record temperatures in the region, residents must remain vigilant about the heatwave while preparing for holiday celebrations.

Las Vegas is bracing for extreme heat this week as temperatures are expected to soar close to 110° on Monday and Tuesday. An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 10 p.m. The region is also expecting a slight chance of showers and below-average temperatures by the Fourth of July, thanks to an incoming cold front.

The forecast suggests that the highest temperatures will be felt in Las Vegas, Pahrump, and Barstow, with the Colorado River Valley potentially reaching between 110° and 115°. Furnace Creek in Death Valley may experience scorching highs around 120°. Overnight temperatures will not provide much relief, lingering in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Wind conditions on Monday night will bring mostly clear skies accompanied by gusty winds, with forecasts predicting gusts between 35-40 MPH, particularly affecting areas near the Spring Mountains. Such conditions might pose a threat to fireworks displays scheduled for the Fourth of July. The winds are expected to range between 20-30 MPH on the holiday itself.

In addition to the extreme heat, there are growing concerns about the potential for heat-related illnesses during this dangerous period. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun exposure, and keep an eye on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.

As the Fourth of July approaches, millions of Americans are preparing to travel, but inclement weather—including the chance of thunderstorms—could disrupt plans across various regions. By the holiday, long-range models indicate a possibility of monsoon storms developing in the southwest, which could influence travel patterns and weather conditions. The FOX Forecast Center is actively monitoring the situation concerning a strong cold front that is anticipated to create widespread storms in the northern Plains and Southeast on July Fourth, adding to the likelihood of travel disruptions.

Previous years have seen record-breaking temperature trends, particularly in the summer of 2024, when Las Vegas experienced the hottest month in its weather history with an average high of 111.5° and a low of 88.3°. During that month, July 7 marked the hottest recorded temperature ever at 120°, while the month overall recorded seven consecutive days at or above 115°, outpacing the previous record of five days. Such high temperatures underscore the ongoing climate trends affecting the region.

The region has also seen significant rainfall in recent months, resulting in travel complications, including airport delays and flooding on essential roadways. Earlier in June, severe storms prompted another extreme heat warning, reflecting the fluctuating weather patterns Las Vegas has been experiencing. As residents gear up for the holiday festivities and face the impending heatwave, they are urged to take safety precautions seriously to mitigate the risks posed by extreme temperatures.
