Las Vegas – A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for a hit-and-run incident that left a 13-year-old boy with significant injuries after he exited a school bus in Las Vegas. The collision occurred on Wednesday, August 20, around 4:30 p.m., at the intersection of Amigo Street and Abbeyfield Rose Drive.
The victim was getting off a school bus that had activated its red flashing stop signs when he was struck by a gray sedan driven by Yarla Valeriano-Perez. As the boy crossed the street from east to west, the vehicle collided with him, and Valeriano-Perez failed to stop, fleeing the scene heading north on Amigo Street.
The teenager sustained substantial injuries, which included a broken left shoulder and arm, sprains to his right knee and ankle, and severe road rash on his left leg and back. Emergency medical personnel transported him to University Medical Center (UMC) for immediate treatment.
A passenger in Valeriano-Perez’s sedan later returned to the scene and provided a statement to the police, identifying Valeriano-Perez as the driver involved in the incident. Officers were able to locate the vehicle, which had significant windshield damage, at the intersection of Las Vegas and Silverado Ranch boulevards.
Upon returning to the scene, Valeriano-Perez informed police that she had fled because she was “scared” and did not exhibit any signs of impairment at the time of the crash. She claimed that she attempted to stop but was unable to do so in time as the child ran into the road.
Following the investigation, law enforcement arrested Valeriano-Perez on multiple charges, including hit-and-run, reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm, and failing to stop at the scene of a crash. During a court appearance on Thursday, August 21, her bail was set at $300,000. A follow-up court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has stressed the importance of obeying traffic laws, especially in school zones, with the return of the school year. The incident serves as a reminder for drivers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly when children are present, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This incident highlights the dangers present in school zones and emphasizes the necessity of adherence to traffic regulations. Parents, students, and motorists are encouraged to prioritize safety to protect the well-being of children during the school year.
