Las Vegas – Homeowner Shoots Intruder: Investigation Underway

In a troubling incident on May 4, a resident of the Canyon Gate Country Club in west Las Vegas fatally shot a 46-year-old man who invaded their home early in the morning. The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. in the 2300 block of Bay Hill Drive.

Luana Graham-Abrao called emergency services to report the home invasion, claiming that her husband, Francis Abrao, had fired shots at the intruder. The intruder has been identified as Gary Havens, who was confirmed to be a stranger to the homeowners. Havens resided only five minutes away, on Echo Ridge Drive.

Upon arrival, police found Gary Havens located at the base of the stairs inside the home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the incident, six children aged between six and 12 years were present in the home, located upstairs during the confrontation.

Firefighters intervened to safely evacuate the children from the upstairs master bedroom balcony using a ladder, ensuring the children did not witness the deceased or interrupt the crime scene.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department quickly secured the area, initiating a thorough investigation by searching for evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. The case has since been referred to the homicide unit for further evaluation.

Ongoing Investigation

As part of the investigation, detectives will review the circumstances surrounding the shooting to determine whether it qualifies as a case of self-defense. Findings from the homicide unit will be forwarded to the Clark County District Attorney’s office for legal assessment.

A memo released by the Canyon Gate Community Association confirmed that Havens was killed during the alleged home invasion and that no other individuals were harmed during the occurrence.

A memorial page established for Gary Havens included messages from family members expressing their sorrow over his death. One tribute highlighted his protective instincts and loyal character, suggesting he had numerous friends and connections.

As of now, the investigation remains active, and both the Abraos and representatives from the district attorney’s office have not commented on the situation. Local law enforcement is dedicated to ensuring a comprehensive review of the evidence and circumstances surrounding this devastating event.
