Las Vegas – The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is inviting residents to share their thoughts on the library’s programs and services through a newly launched community survey. Open until July 24, 2025, the survey aims to gather feedback that will help enhance various offerings throughout the district. Participation is anonymous, with the survey estimated to take around 10 minutes to complete.

Currently, the library district operates 27 locations, including convenient book vending machines at Sunrise Hospital and the Boulevard Mall. Residents can obtain a library card free of charge, which opens access to a range of physical items, such as books, video games, CDs, and DVDs, as well as digital content, including language learning tools like Rosetta Stone. This breadth of resources emphasizes the library’s commitment to serve the community effectively.

The library district also provides a tutoring service aimed at assisting children in the area. This program, funded by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation and Andson, is particularly significant for families who may struggle to afford private tutoring services, often costing around $50 per hour. Implemented since 2014, the tutoring program is currently available at 10 libraries across Clark County, offering free homework help to children.

The specific libraries offering this essential service include:

  • Centennial Hills Library
  • East Las Vegas Library
  • Enterprise Library
  • Rainbow Library
  • Spring Valley Library
  • Sunrise Library
  • West Las Vegas Library
  • Whitney Library
  • Windmill Library

In addition to the tutoring service, various libraries are innovating ways to engage children and promote literacy. At the Whitney Library, local librarian Billy Allen uses music, particularly rap and hip-hop, to capture children’s attention during literacy activities. This approach is part of a broader initiative at the Whitney Library, which is known for its diverse storytelling methods and efforts to ensure children are provided meals before engaging in reading sessions. The library strives to create an inviting and supportive atmosphere for all children.

Allen underscores the significance of representation in reading, particularly for young Black boys. The aim is to provide role models through literature, encouraging them to see themselves in stories and to actively participate in reading. In addition to its programming for children, the Whitney Library is on track to enhance its resources by acquiring a digital preservation lab, allowing for further enrichment of its offerings to the community.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is committed not only to supporting children’s literacy but also addressing adult literacy and reading challenges. This focus illustrates the library’s role as a critical resource in the community, aimed at improving education and literacy for residents of all ages.

As the district seeks more community feedback through the survey, it hopes to build upon its existing services and expand outreach to meet the needs of Las Vegas residents more effectively.
