The pool party culture in Las Vegas has undergone a remarkable evolution over the last 95 years, with its origins tracing back to the opening of Vegas Park Resort in 1909. Fast forward to modern-day Las Vegas, where extravagant dayclubs attract thousands of partygoers each summer, highlighting the city’s ability to adapt to the changing tastes and desires of its visitors.
In 1909, Vegas Park Resort opened with a “plunge” pool that utilized water from Las Vegas Creek, providing bathing suits for guests. This early resort set a precedent for leisure and social gatherings, with dances hosted every Wednesday and Saturday featuring live music from the Fastido Orchestra.
Just two years later, in 1911, Ladd’s Resort, established by pioneer James Ladd, came to life with its dancing area and swirling pool fed by an artesian well, drawing visitors via horse-drawn wagons. A marketing campaign in the summer of 1953 saw Sands Hotel place a craps table in the shallow end of its pool, a visually striking stunt captured in a now-iconic photo that garnered worldwide attention. The Flamingo hotel further solidified pool culture in Las Vegas by featuring its pool in the 1964 film “Viva Las Vegas,” starring Elvis Presley.
Fast forward to the early 2000s, Moorea Beach at Mandalay Bay opened in 2003 as a topless pool, giving rise to a new wave of “toptional” sunbathing locations across Las Vegas. The groundbreaking Rehab pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel made its debut in 2004, characterized by high cover charges on the weekends and quickly becoming a major attraction, grossing an impressive $1.5 million in its first summer alone.
In 2008, the Sapphire Pool at Rio was introduced with promises of exotic dancers, but this venture was short-lived, shutting down within three months amid a series of legal troubles. As of now, the Go Pool at Flamingo Las Vegas has become a central figure in the pool party scene, boasting a 1.5-acre space with five distinct pools, a swim-up bar, and a vibrant roster of DJs spinning day and night.
