Las Vegas – A school bus driver has been determined at fault in a tragic incident that led to the death of 12-year-old Haylee Ryan, a student from Lied Stem Academy, following a collision with a school bus on October 6, 2025. This accident has raised significant concerns regarding safety for students commuting to and from school.

The collision happened when Ryan was riding her bicycle westbound on Tropical Parkway near North Emerald Eagle Street. According to the crash report, the bus, a 2019 Thomas Built model, failed to provide sufficient space for Ryan, ultimately clipping the left handlebar of her bike. As a result of this contact, Ryan was forced to veer into a divider between the bike lane and the travel lane, where her bicycle collided with a stationary Chevrolet Tahoe parked in the bike lane.

After the impact with the vehicle, Ryan fell to the ground, and the rear wheels of the bus ran over her lower extremities as it continued to move down the street for an additional 121 feet before coming to a stop. Despite being transported to a trauma unit, Ryan suffered severe injuries, particularly to her pelvis and lower extremities, and unfortunately died the following day. At the time of the accident, she was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment.

The bus driver involved in the incident, a 75-year-old woman whose identity has not been publicly revealed, has not been charged regarding the collision. Investigators found that no charges would be filed until the conclusion of their ongoing inquiry. The traffic investigation has been complicated by the fact that there was only one witness from the sidewalk, as none of the 55 students on the bus or the driver were able to fully witness the incident.

Ryan’s death has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, leading to a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $80,000 to assist her family. A candlelight vigil held in her honor drew nearly 400 attendees, underscoring the impact of her loss on the community. During the vigil, Ryan’s grandmother shared heartfelt sentiments about her granddaughter.

As the investigation continues, the incident has ignited discussions about potential safety reforms for students walking or biking in proximity to schools, highlighting the need for improved safety measures during peak school hours. The community is paying close attention to these discussions as they advocate for solutions to prevent similar accidents in the future.

In the wake of this tragedy, Haylee’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Canyon Ridge Christian Church. The accident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly for young cyclists navigating busy streets.
