Las Vegas – A pair of overnight shootings in Las Vegas resulted in one fatality and left two others in critical condition on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The incidents, occurring in distinct locations, have prompted police to increase their investigative efforts in both cases.
The first shooting incident took place around 9:02 p.m. near the 2300 block of Olive Street, close to Fremont Street and Charleston Boulevard. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported all victims to hospitals, where one succumbed to his injuries while the other two remain in critical condition. The motive behind this shooting is currently under investigation, and detectives are processing multiple locations in the area, including canvas efforts at nearby businesses such as Lowe’s, IHOP, and Wildfire Fremont. Authorities have reassured the public that there is no further danger and are urging anyone with information to reach out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) homicide section or to report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
In a separate shooting incident that occurred hours later, around 12:38 a.m. on Thursday, police responded to a report of gunfire in the 6000 block of Coja Street, located near South Cimarron Road and West Patrick Lane. Multiple 911 calls reported a shooting in a garage. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim who had sustained apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures attempted by first responders. Investigators noted that approximately 30 rounds were fired during this shooting, yet only one individual was struck. A white Dodge Charger with a distinctive black front bumper was observed circling the neighborhood prior to the incident. Detectives are considering this shooting an isolated event, although the relationship between the victim and any potential suspects remains unclear. As with the earlier incident, anyone with information is encouraged to contact LVMPD or Crime Stoppers.
In connection to previous violence in the area, a former security guard, Kegia Mitchell, received a prison sentence of up to 14 years for fatally shooting an individual outside a Las Vegas 7-Eleven in August 2020. At age 41, during COVID-19 lockdowns, Mitchell was on duty when the incident occurred. The victim, identified as Thomas Martin, attempted to enter the store while Mitchell was screening customers. Following her conviction of voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon, Mitchell accepted an Alford plea agreement, allowing her to plead no contest while acknowledging that the prosecution had sufficient evidence for a conviction.
Further highlighting the issue of gun violence in the community, a survivor from a shooting that took place at Estelle Neal Park on June 13 recounted a harrowing experience while demonstrating remarkable bravery. The survivor, who was shot in the head, noticed a mother and her child at the park and ran to warn them, effectively putting himself in danger to shield them from harm. The gunman, 23-year-old Elijah Jones, faces several charges, including attempted murder and robbery. The survivor and others affected by the incident remain traumatized but are grateful for the individual’s selfless act of protection. While Las Vegas Deputy City Marshals patrol public parks, their presence cannot cover all areas at all times, prompting authorities to encourage the public to report any signs of danger promptly.
As investigations continue into the recent shootings, community outreach and open communication with law enforcement will play a significant role in addressing the issue of gun violence and ensuring public safety.
