The Las Vegas Strip shows signs of decreased tourism activity.
Las Vegas is experiencing a downturn in tourism, with a 6.9% drop in visitor numbers in the first quarter of 2025. Economic issues, reduced flight options, and changes in government policies are all contributing factors to the decline. Despite a slight increase in convention attendance, the overall outlook for tourism remains uncertain as Las Vegas braces for a potentially tough summer season.
Las Vegas is currently grappling with a downturn in tourism as visitor numbers decline and economic challenges loom. Early reports from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) indicate a concerning 6.9% decrease in overall visitation in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. This slowdown comes after a peak in 2024, when tourism spending reached $55.1 billion and visitor count was just shy of 42.5 million, a figure approaching pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019.
In the first quarter of 2025, passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport fell by 3.7%. Additionally, hotel occupancy rates have dipped slightly, while gaming revenue in Las Vegas Strip casinos experienced a notable 4.8% decline in March compared to March of the previous year. The LVCVA anticipates a potential downturn this summer, highlighting concerns over the overall trajectory of tourism.
The decline in visitor numbers could be linked to several factors. Economic forecasts released by the Nevada Legislature’s Economic Forum identified a $191 million reduction in revenue projections for the upcoming biennium, further exacerbating concerns about the state’s financial outlook. The International Monetary Fund’s World Uncertainty Index also noted consumer confidence is waning, influenced by ongoing tariff-related uncertainties.
Notably, changes in U.S. government policies, including President Trump’s return to office and his controversial trade and immigration measures, are believed to have played a role in discouraging international visits. Recently, the Trump administration temporarily reduced tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, which adds to the economic fluctuations that impact tourism perspectives. This shift may further complicate the relationship between U.S. financial policies and international travel.
International travel trends are showing troubling signs, with Canadian airlines like WestJet announcing the suspension of flights from Edmonton to Las Vegas during the summer months. In 2023 and 2024, one in eight visitors to Las Vegas came from abroad, with Canadian tourists making up the largest segment. Current conditions suggest that political and economic uncertainties are discouraging potential visitors from Canada and elsewhere.
As Las Vegas prepares for the summer season, early booking numbers signal a potential for even greater declines in visitation. The LVCVA has also projected a budget shortfall of $51 million for the 2026 fiscal budget, with an anticipated general fund balance dropping below $100 million for the first time since 2022. This is coupled with a projected 5% decrease in room tax revenue in the current fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, although hotel average daily rates saw a slight increase of 3.1% in March.
Despite the setbacks in leisure travel, convention attendance saw an uptick of 10% during the first quarter of 2025, thanks to a major health care conference hosted in Las Vegas. Conventions account for approximately 15% of all visitors, highlighting the sector’s importance to the city’s tourism economy. However, continued declines in leisure travel may result in reduced room tax revenue, posing a significant risk to the tourism-dependent economy and increasing reliance on the convention sector to sustain financial stability.
Overall, as Las Vegas contends with these challenges, the outlook for the rest of 2025 remains uncertain, with tourism officials and stakeholders closely monitoring the situation.
