Young tourists experiencing Las Vegas attractions

News Summary

Las Vegas is witnessing a transformative change in tourism as millennials and Gen Z redefine travel preferences. The younger generations, making up nearly half of visitors, prioritize experiences over traditional gambling. This demographic shift is influencing the tourism landscape, prompting venues to adapt their offerings. Despite a recent decline in visitor numbers, gaming and immersive dining experiences continue to attract the younger demographic, highlighting the importance of affordability and social media visibility for success in the evolving Las Vegas market.

Las Vegas is undergoing a significant shift in its tourism landscape as younger generations, particularly millennials and Gen Z, redefine the experience economy. This change comes as baby boomers, once the mainstay of the city’s visitor demographic, begin to age out of the market. Recent figures reveal that millennials, defined as those born between 1981 and 1996, accounted for nearly 50% of all visitors to Las Vegas in 2024. Meanwhile, Gen Z, individuals born after 1996, is starting to make its mark on the travel scene, bringing new expectations and travel habits that diverge from those of previous generations.

By 2024, the average age of Las Vegas visitors had dropped to 43.6 years from 46.2 in 2019. This demographic shift is leading to a stronger focus on experiences rather than just traditional gambling. Derek Stevens, owner of multiple Downtown Las Vegas casinos, notes that today’s visitors prioritize experiences, making customer service and engaging atmospheres critical components of the city’s tourism offerings.

The evolution of Las Vegas as a destination is marked by its historical ability to adapt. From the glamorous Rat Pack era to the family-friendly resorts of the 1980s and 1990s, the city has continuously molded itself to fit the cultural zeitgeist. In 2011, Las Vegas tapped into the growing popularity of the electronic dance music scene by hosting the Electric Daisy Carnival, which now attracts over 500,000 attendees annually. Furthermore, the proliferation of professional sports franchises in the city has added a new layer to the tourism experience, appealing to a younger, sports-savvy audience.

Despite these positive trends, the first five months of 2025 saw a 6.5% decline in total visitors compared to the previous year, as well as a 3.7% drop in passenger numbers at Harry Reid International Airport. Hotel occupancy rates and gaming revenues on the Strip also reported year-over-year declines of over 1%. The changes in consumer behavior include a movement towards budget-friendly travel options, driven primarily by Gen Z, who prioritize experiences that offer value.

Millennials have shown a robust interest in gaming, with nearly 80% gambling during their visits in 2024, averaging $767.91 on gaming activities. Conversely, Gen Z tourists spent about $200 less on average than their millennial counterparts, reflecting differing priorities among the younger generation. The adaptation of casinos to meet these tastes, such as modernizing slot machines, has been essential in attracting this demographic, which is increasingly less interested in traditional gambling methods.

Moreover, sports betting has seen substantial growth following the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned the federal ban on sports wagering, further embedding Las Vegas into the modern gambling landscape. Dayclubs have also emerged as popular venues for younger visitors, with 30% of Gen Z attendees frequenting these locales, compared to 18% of millennials.

Dining experiences in Las Vegas are evolving to cater to the social media-savvy younger generation, creating atmospheric and immersive experiences. Gen Z is particularly drawn to locations that offer photo opportunities, making social media visibility a critical factor for restaurant success. Consequently, Downtown Las Vegas has surged in popularity, with 70% of Gen Z tourists including it in their itineraries.

As Las Vegas navigates these changing consumer preferences, it is clear that the city must continue to evolve its offerings to remain appealing to millennials and Gen Z. The focus on affordability and unique experiences will be vital in the coming years. As the city adapts to these new expectations, the goal remains to cultivate an environment that not only attracts visitors but also keeps them coming back.
