Las Vegas
Two separate traffic crashes in Las Vegas have left two people dead and a 9-year-old girl critically injured. The first incident, which occurred on Monday morning, April 21, involved a two-vehicle collision that resulted in the death of an elderly man. In a second, unrelated incident later that evening, a high-speed crash led to two fatalities, including a 38-year-old woman.
First Fatal Crash Details
The first accident took place at approximately 8:30 a.m., at the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Spencer Street in South Las Vegas Valley. A 2007 Hyundai Azera, driven by an 84-year-old man, was traveling east on Flamingo Road when it entered the intersection against a red light. The vehicle collided with a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander that was moving south on Spencer Street through a green light. The impact caused the Hyundai to veer off the road and strike a light pole.
The elderly driver was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased is pending release by the Clark County Coroner’s Office, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the 52-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi and a 9-year-old passenger sustained injuries but did not require hospitalization. Following the crash, authorities reported that the driver of the Mitsubishi exhibited no signs of impairment.
Second Fatal Crash Incident
On the same day, another server incident was reported at around 7:44 p.m. on East Carey Avenue, just east of North Pecos Road. In this case, a 36-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Nissan Murano at a high rate of speed. After losing control of the vehicle while crossing the intersection with Pecos Road, the SUV struck the south-side curb, sailed onto the sidewalk, and collided with a wall and a power pole before coming to a stop in the street.
Both the driver and an adult passenger were ejected from the vehicle upon impact, while a 9-year-old girl was trapped in the rear seat during the crash. Authorities pronounced both the driver and the adult passenger, identified as 38-year-old Latasha Patterson, dead at the scene. The name of the driver is still pending identification. The critically injured 9-year-old girl was transported to UMC Hospital, where family members have reported she is responsive despite her critical condition.
Traffic Fatalities and Community Response
These incidents mark the 75th and 76th traffic-related fatalities within the jurisdiction of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department this year. Speeding is believed to have played a significant role in the second crash. Family members of the injured child are reportedly making arrangements to transfer her to Reno to ensure she receives further support, alongside setting up a Gofundme page to assist with mounting medical expenses.
As authorities continue to investigate both crashes, they have urged drivers to exercise caution, adhere to traffic signals, and comply with speed limits to prevent future tragedies on the roads of Las Vegas.
