Las Vegas experienced its first 100-degree Fahrenheit day this summer, signaling the start of the season. The National Weather Service noted that this year’s milestone came later than last year’s. Health advisories were issued due to high UV levels, urging sun protection and hydration. Despite the heat, May has been marked as the wettest month on record for the city, raising awareness about weather patterns and their impacts on outdoor activities.
Las Vegas recorded its first 100-degree Fahrenheit day of 2025 on Thursday at 3:21 p.m., marking an unofficial start to the summer season in the Las Vegas valley, according to the National Weather Service. This year, the valley’s first occurrence of triple-digit heat came later than in 2024, which saw temperatures reach 100 degrees as early as May 17.
The average date for Las Vegas to hit this milestone is May 24, with historical records showing that the earliest 100-degree day was observed on May 1, 1947. Conversely, a later 100-degree day was recorded on June 30, 2023. Typically, Southern Nevada enjoys normal high temperatures around 90 degrees this time of year.
Despite the recent spike in temperatures, highs are anticipated to remain in the 90s leading up to Memorial Day weekend. Slightly cooler conditions are forecast for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with Monday expected to see a high of 98 degrees. Forecasters predict clear skies along with windy conditions on Friday, featuring a high near 96 and a low around 67 degrees. This weekend, temperatures are expected to dip into the low 90s with nighttime lows in the low 70s.
The UV index in the area is categorized as “very high,” prompting recommendations for sun protection. Residents and visitors are encouraged to wear sunscreen, hats, and light-colored clothing while outdoors, particularly between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Additionally, it is advised to maintain hydration by consuming at least 24 ounces of water per hour if spending extended periods outdoors in the heat.
Pet owners are also advised to monitor surface temperatures on sidewalks and pavement before taking dogs for walks to prevent paw burns. Furthermore, a lake wind advisory has been issued for both Lakes Mead and Mohave due to gusty winds that could create hazardous conditions on the water.
Despite the recent heat, May 2025 has already been marked as the wettest May on record for Las Vegas, with a total of 1.44 inches of rain recorded at Harry Reid International Airport. This rainfall has contributed to various weather disturbances, including strong winds and rain that disrupted events such as the Electric Daisy Carnival last weekend.
The climate trends for Las Vegas this year began with the first 90-degree day recorded on March 26. Prior to that, February 3 marked the warming trend as the area saw its first 80-degree temperature, a noteworthy feat considering it was the third-warmest February since 1937. In April, a record-high temperature of 93 degrees was logged just one day before officially reaching 96 degrees on April 11.
As summer officially begins marking the transition into hotter months, residents are urged to remain vigilant about health and safety amid rising temperatures. Preparedness measures include staying hydrated, dressing appropriately for intense sun exposure, and ensuring pets’ safety while enjoying outdoor activities.
