Emergency responders taking action at the United Healthcare office following a hoax substance incident.
Jennifer Forbes, a 50-year-old woman from Las Vegas, has been arrested for allegedly sending a threatening letter containing a hoax substance to a United Healthcare office. The letter sparked immediate concern when an employee discovered a suspicious black and yellow substance inside, leading to an emergency response and evacuation of the building. Forbes faces multiple charges, including sending false information regarding an act of terror. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled soon as the legal proceedings unfold.
A woman in Las Vegas, identified as Jennifer Forbes, 50, has been arrested and is currently being held on a $50,000 bail for allegedly mailing a letter containing a suspicious substance to a local United Healthcare office. The incident unfolded on June 24 at around 9:40 a.m. when an employee opened the letter, discovering an unknown black and yellow substance inside.
The letter included alarming content related to fungus and prompted immediate concern from the United Healthcare employee, who exited the mail room despite not experiencing any symptoms. In response to the potential threat, medical personnel and local police officers were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arriving at the United Healthcare office, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s ARMOR team took proactive measures by shutting down the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on the third floor. Subsequently, they evacuated the entire building to safeguard the health and safety of employees. While the investigation was ongoing, LVMPD ARMOR staff began assessing the situation.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., police detectives arrived and traced the envelope back to Forbes, who had previously interacted with United Healthcare regarding health inquiries, including questions about an optometrist and dermatologist.
Following their identification of Forbes as the letter’s sender, detectives maintained surveillance at her residence. By around 12:15 p.m., police conducted a recorded interview with the employee who opened the package, who noted familiarity with Forbes due to her prior claims. During the interrogation, it came to light that an accompanying note discussed fungus and flesh-eating bacteria.
The substance identified within the letter was ultimately categorized as a hoax substance by LVMPD. The employee expressed feelings of being threatened, especially in light of the recent murder of United Healthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, emphasizing the heightened anxiety surrounding such incidents.
The threatening nature of the letter led to widespread concern among staff, resulting in approximately 500 employees having to work overtime while the situation was addressed. This led to substantial financial expenditures for United Healthcare amidst the unfolding crisis.
After ensuring the safety of the scene, LVMPD approached Forbes’ mobile home around 2:30 p.m.. When confronted, she admitted to sending a letter to United Healthcare but subsequently retreated inside her home. This prompted law enforcement to establish probable cause for her arrest. Forbes was taken into custody at the Clark County Detention Center after also being detained for an unrelated traffic violation during which she exhibited signs of hysteria and requested legal counsel.
Forbes is facing multiple charges, including sending a threat or false information regarding an act of terror and dispersing a hoax substance. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for July 15, as the legal proceedings against her continue to unfold.
