Las Vegas, Nevada

Ground was broken for the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple on Thursday, September 25, 2025, marking a significant milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the region. This new temple will be the second in the Las Vegas valley and the fourth in Nevada, following the Las Vegas Nevada Temple and the Reno Nevada Temple.

The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Elder Michael A. Dunn, a General Authority Seventy and first counselor in the United States Southwest Area presidency. During the event, Elder Dunn offered prayers for the workers, craftspeople, and artisans who will be constructing the temple, emphasizing the hope that their craftsmanship will reflect the divine truths taught within the temple’s walls. He also prayed for the spiritual readiness of those who will visit the temple.

Furthermore, Elder Thomas A. Thomas, an Area Seventy, highlighted the vital role temples play in strengthening individuals’ relationships with Jesus Christ. Youth speaker Avrie Stephens shared her personal experience, discussing how preparing to enter the temple has brought her peace and understanding of God’s plan for her life.

About the Temple

The Lone Mountain Temple will be a three-story building, covering approximately 87,000 square feet, and it will be situated on a 19.8-acre plot located southwest of Hickam Avenue between North Grand Canyon Drive and Tee Pee Lane in Lone Mountain, Las Vegas. This groundbreaking comes just 17 days before the dedication of the Elko Nevada Temple, which is scheduled for October 12, 2025.

The announcement for the Lone Mountain temple was made by President Russell M. Nelson during a general conference on October 2, 2022, as part of a list of 18 new temple locations. Nevada currently hosts two active temples, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple, dedicated on December 16, 1989, and the Reno Nevada Temple, dedicated on April 23, 2000. The Elko Nevada Temple recently concluded its open house on September 13, 2025.

Community Concerns and Approval

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the temple’s groundbreaking, the proposal faced significant debate and concerns from community members. Issues raised included traffic impacts, illumination from the temple, and its overall scale. In response to these community apprehensions, the Las Vegas City Council approved the temple proposal in July 2024 while adopting a “dark sky” ordinance aimed at limiting lighting to address the concerns raised.

Construction for the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple is anticipated to commence in October 2025, adding to the growing number of Latter-day Saints facilities in the state. Nevada has nearly 200,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized into approximately 350 congregations.

The groundbreaking of the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple symbolizes both a physical construction and the larger commitment of the Latter-day Saints community in Nevada to their faith and spiritual practices. As the community prepares for the temple’s completion, there is a shared hope that it will serve as a sacred space for spiritual growth and connection among its members.
