Las Vegas is set to honor veterans and foster community spirit during Memorial Day weekend with various ceremonies, resource fairs, and celebrations from May 23 to May 26. The community will engage in gatherings, BBQs, and entertainment events, emphasizing both remembrance and celebration while ensuring safety and traffic management.

Las Vegas will honor veterans and celebrate community spirit during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend with a series of events spread across the city. Recognized as a significant time to pay tribute to those who have served in the armed forces, various activities, ceremonies, and resource fairs are planned from May 23 to May 26, 2023.

The events commence on Friday, May 23, with the “Walk of Honor” at Police Memorial Park, starting at 7:30 p.m., hosted by Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley and Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske. Community members are encouraged to bring photos of their service members to be displayed. Candles will be available while supplies last, and visitors can also partake in a flag display throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, May 24, several ceremonies and activities are scheduled. Palm Mortuaries will host Memorial Day services and a veterans resource fair at Palm Henderson, located at 800 S Boulder Highway, Henderson. Simultaneously, Palm Eastern at 7600 South Eastern Avenue will conduct a flag placement ceremony with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at 7 a.m. In North Las Vegas, residents can enjoy a Memorial Day barbecue and resource fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veterans and Community Resource Center, featuring a car show and support from local organizations focused on veterans’ well-being. Additionally, more than 500 flags will be displayed at Cornerstone Park in Henderson to honor veterans starting from Friday.

The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City will also be busy on Saturday, with a flag placement event kicking off the weekend’s activities. Other ceremonies during the weekend include a Special Forces Ceremony on Sunday, May 25, at 10 a.m., and a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26, starting at 1 p.m.

Memorial Day itself, on Monday, May 26, will see various events in full swing. A Boy Scouts flag ceremony with a bagpiper and the national anthem will take place at Palm Eastern from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Palm Downtown at 1325 North Main Street will host a Memorial Day service. Councilwoman Victoria Seaman will lead a ceremony at Lake Sahara South Park at 9:30 a.m. Alongside, the “Field of Honor” ceremony in Henderson will be held at 9 a.m. to further commemorate those who have served.

The Southern Highlands Community Association will host its 23rd annual event from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., supporting Nellis and Creech Air Force bases, featuring games, food trucks, and fireworks for a family-friendly closure to the holiday. Moreover, a presentation by UNLV Rebel Vets will honor fallen service members, adding to the depth of the weekend’s memorial celebrations.

Aside from these solemn ceremonies, Las Vegas will feature numerous entertainment options and community gatherings. Concerts and parties at major clubs on The Strip are expected to attract crowds, with performances by well-known artists such as Steve Aoki, Marshmello, and The Chainsmokers. Local restaurants and cafes will also join in by offering special promotions, creating a celebratory environment amid the weekend’s solemnities.

Residents are reminded to plan ahead due to expected heavy traffic and to follow safety tips, particularly for grilling, as many will enjoy backyard barbecues and social events throughout the holiday weekend. As Las Vegas comes together to honor its veterans, the community spirit will shine brightly through a blend of remembrance and celebration.
