Community members come together to honor veterans during Memorial Day weekend in Southern Nevada.
Southern Nevada is gearing up for a Memorial Day weekend filled with events honoring veterans, including ceremonies, community gatherings, and tributes. Key events include ceremonies at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, the ‘Walk of Honor’ event hosted by local officials, and a Memorial Day barbecue in North Las Vegas. Henderson and the Inspirada community also have planned activities designed to pay tribute to fallen service members. These events emphasize community unity and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces.
The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City will conduct ceremonies throughout Memorial Day weekend, with flag placement beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 25. In a solemn event on Sunday, May 26, the annual Special Forces Ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. A significant Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery will take place on Monday, May 27, at 1 p.m., where multiple speakers will participate in a tribute presentation featuring nearly 7,000 dog tags representing fallen service members from the UNLV Rebel Vets. This tribute specifically honors those who sacrificed their lives during the Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001.
On Friday evening, May 24, Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley, along with Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske, will host the “Walk of Honor” event at Police Memorial Park at 7:30 p.m. Community members are encouraged to attend and bring photos of their family service members to honor those who lost their lives in service. Candles will be provided at the event, while supplies last, and a flag display will remain available for viewing throughout the weekend.
In North Las Vegas, a Memorial Day barbecue and resource fair will be held on Saturday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veterans and Community Resource Center. This event aims to serve veterans and their families by providing connections to various local organizations offering tailored support services. Highlights of the fair include a car show featuring vehicles from the North Las Vegas Fire Department and Nellis Air Force Base.
Additional Memorial Day festivities will occur in Henderson, with an impressive display of over 500 American flags set to be showcased at Cornerstone Park starting on Friday. The “Field of Honor” ceremony at this park will occur on Memorial Day at 9 a.m., allowing residents and visitors to pay their respects.
The Inspirada community has organized an event titled “Honoring the Fallen: Memorial Day Ceremony” on Monday, featuring veteran Harold Friedman as the lead. This ceremony aims to pay tribute to fallen service members within the local community.
The Southern Highlands Community Association is hosting its 23rd annual event in support of Nellis & Creech Air Force Bases. Scheduled activities will include field games, food trucks, water activities, and fireworks, with proceeds benefiting Operation Warm Heart.
As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, residents of Southern Nevada are encouraged to participate in these events designed to honor and remember the sacrifices made by veterans. With a range of ceremonies, performances, and community gatherings planned throughout the weekend, this year’s observance promises to be a moment of unity and gratitude for those who have served in the armed forces.
Commemorating Memorial Day through these events is crucial for fostering awareness and appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members. Attending and participating in local events can provide individuals and families an opportunity to connect, reflect, and pay homage to those who have bravely served the nation.
