Las Vegas

An Ohio woman has filed a lawsuit against rapper Cardi B for assault, battery, and negligence following an incident at Drai’s Beachclub on July 29, 2023. The lawsuit, which was lodged just before the statute of limitations in Nevada was set to expire, claims that Cardi B threw her microphone at the plaintiff, identified only as Jane Doe, after Doe splashed a small amount of her drink during the performance.

The lawsuit states that during the concert, Cardi B encouraged the audience to splash her with drinks, despite the visibly high temperatures at the venue. After Doe complied by splashing some of her drink in the rapper’s direction, Cardi B allegedly reacted by forcefully launching her microphone towards Doe, striking her and causing harmful and offensive contact. Before the incident, Cardi B reportedly exclaimed, “I said splash my p—, not my face, b—,” which purportedly preceded the microphone throw.

Following the incident, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department conducted an investigation but did not charge Cardi B with any crimes. However, the microphone involved in the altercation was subsequently auctioned on eBay for $99,000. Doe claims that the auction heightened her emotional distress, further publicizing her traumatic experience.

The lawsuit seeks damages amounting up to $15,000, covering claims for physical and emotional injuries as well as reputational harm. Jane Doe describes the incident as a traumatic event that has severely impacted her quality of life. Cardi B’s representatives have yet to respond to the lawsuit, and the rapper’s legal team has described the allegations as a “transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown.”

Details of the Incident

During the concert at Drai’s Beachclub, a venue known for hosting high-profile performances, Cardi B engaged with the audience, inviting them to participate in what she promoted as a fun, interactive experience. The extreme heat conditions did not go unnoticed, which could have contributed to the atmosphere of heightened emotions among both the crowd and the performer.

After the incident, Doe’s legal team lodged a complaint not only against Cardi B but also against Drai’s Beachclub and its management. They allege that the venue failed to ensure a safe environment for attendees. The lawsuit contends that Cardi B “should have known” that throwing a microphone could pose a significant threat compared to light and playful splashing, raising questions about the responsibility of performers in such interactive situations.

Public Reaction and Media Attention

The incident has gone viral, with footage captured from multiple angles circulating widely on social media. Cardi B has addressed the incident in public statements, emphasizing her intention was not to appear ghetto in her reaction. As the situation gained notoriety, it became a subject of significant media interest. Jane Doe’s attorney has announced a press conference to provide further details about the lawsuit and answer inquiries regarding this high-profile case.

This legal action will test the boundaries of performer-audience interactions, the responsibilities of event managers, and the impact of viral incidents on individuals involved. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for how artists engage with their fans during live performances.
