A school bus driver has been determined to be at fault for a tragic collision that resulted in the death of 12-year-old Haylee Ryan outside Lied STEM Academy. The incident occurred on October 6, as Haylee was riding her bike home from school when she was struck by a Clark County School District (CCSD) bus.

According to investigators, Haylee was traveling westbound on Tropical Parkway in a designated bike lane when the accident took place. As she maneuvered around a parked car on her right, the school bus passed her on the left without allowing adequate space for her bicycle. The investigation report indicated that the bus failed to provide enough roadway space, which ultimately led to the collision.

When the bus struck Haylee’s bike, the impact affected the left side of her handlebars, causing the right side to collide with the parked vehicle. This force ejected her from the bike and resulted in the bus running over her, causing severe injuries to her pelvis and lower extremities. Emergency responders transported Haylee to the University Medical Center’s trauma center, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

The 75-year-old bus driver has been found at fault for the accident; however, no enforcement action has been taken yet due to the ongoing investigation led by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). The LVMPD confirmed that their investigation is still underway, and the conclusions drawn so far are based on preliminary findings. Although the bus driver has not been suspended, they have been reassigned to other duties that do not involve transporting children.

Haylee’s mother, Meghan, shared that her daughter was an active and creative child with a passion for art, robotics, and cats. In memory of Haylee, a vigil was held outside Lied STEM Academy where community members gathered to honor her and share their fond memories. A memorial service is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, at Canyon Ridge Christian Church, with the public invited to attend.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety for young cyclists in the area and raises awareness about the need for increased vigilance among drivers, especially when students are traveling to and from school. Haylee’s tragic death serves as a somber reminder of the risks that children face while biking, especially in busy roadways.

In the wake of the accident, the community has rallied together to support Haylee’s family during this difficult time. Meghan Ryan expressed both her heartbreak and a sense of peace, as she finds comfort in her belief that her daughter is now with God.

As the investigation continues, further details may emerge regarding the circumstances of the collision and potential changes to traffic safety measures in the area.
