News Summary
Mayors of Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas discussed the region’s future at a recent luncheon. They emphasized optimism and growth despite a decline in tourism revenue, revealing plans for new projects including a civic plaza, a care center, and community development initiatives. The mayors celebrated female leadership in the area and voiced support for new infrastructure developments to foster a vibrant community for residents amid ongoing challenges related to natural resources.
Las Vegas, NV – Mayors Shelley Berkley of Las Vegas, Michelle Romero of Henderson, and Pamela Goynes-Brown of North Las Vegas converged at a luncheon sponsored by the Vegas Chamber to discuss the future of Southern Nevada, emphasizing optimism and plans for growth in spite of a recent decline in tourism revenue. The event, hosted at the Orleans hotel-casino, attracted approximately 500 attendees and was moderated by Mary Beth Sewald, president of the Vegas Chamber.
Berkley acknowledged the current economic slowdown but predicted “explosive growth” for Las Vegas over the next decade. She introduced several significant projects, including the construction of a new civic plaza next to City Hall, which will offer a home for community organizations such as the Vegas Chamber and Workforce Connection. This civic plaza will also streamline the city’s business licensing operations.
In addition to the civic plaza, Berkley announced new funding for a 40-bed recuperative care center and outlined the planned expansion of the Medical District within the city. These projects are aimed at enhancing local services and supporting the ongoing needs of residents.
Mayor Goynes-Brown highlighted a new community development initiative in North Las Vegas, including plans for a multi-use complex that will be built on the site of the former Texas Station hotel-casino. Furthermore, she discussed the Apex industrial park, which is regarded as Southern Nevada’s counterpart to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center and includes the notable Tesla battery gigafactory.
With Goynes-Brown set to complete her term in early 2027, she reflected on her achievements during her tenure. Meanwhile, Mayor Romero shared her excitement about the establishment of Henderson’s first charter school, which is sponsored by the city, while noting that three additional charter applications are currently under consideration. Romero underscored the value of education among Henderson residents and cited funding made available through marijuana taxes and redevelopment initiatives for educational grants.
Throughout the discussions, the mayors acknowledged the growth of female leadership in Southern Nevada, pointing out the presence of a female-majority Legislature and an increasing number of women in key roles within local government. When discussing leadership styles, Goynes-Brown attributed a more level-headed approach to the increasing number of women in leadership positions, while Berkley and Romero expressed varying opinions on the influence of gender on their respective roles.
All three mayors supported the potential development of a new airport in the Ivanpah Valley, as well as a fuel tax indexing bill that would provide funding for necessary road projects. They expressed their satisfaction with their roles, with Romero characterizing her position as mayor as the “best job ever.”
The Southern Nevada region has experienced population growth of 5.4% over the past four years, with North Las Vegas witnessing a remarkable increase of 12.6%, Henderson by 10%, and Las Vegas itself by 5%. Contributing factors to this growth include a thriving tourism industry, affordable housing, and favorable weather conditions, all which continue to attract new residents to the area.
However, amidst this growth, concerns remain regarding natural resources. Lake Mead, the main water source for Southern Nevada, has reached alarmingly low levels, currently at one-third full, prompting concerns about ongoing drought conditions and the sustainability of water resources in the region.
As Southern Nevada’s city leaders navigate these challenges and opportunities, they remain focused on fostering a vibrant, forward-thinking community prepared for future growth.
