Dark clouds and thunderstorms looming over the Las Vegas Valley

Southern Nevada is bracing for unsettled weather, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Weather Alert Days. Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected from Monday to Wednesday, raising concerns about flash flooding. A flash flood warning is already active for northwestern Clark County. Meteorological models predict increased storm activity, particularly on Tuesday, with valley temperatures forecasted to drop into the low 90s. Residents are urged to remain cautious as the area deals with a prolonged dry spell and potential severe weather impacts.

Las Vegas, Nevada – Unsettled weather is set to hit Southern Nevada at the beginning of the week, leading to the issuance of Weather Alert Days by the National Weather Service from Monday through Wednesday. This will include rain showers and thunderstorms across the area, with a particular focus on flash flooding risks.

Today, a flash flood warning is currently active for northwestern Clark County, specifically affecting Indian Springs, and is expected to remain in effect until 4:15 p.m. The forecast for Monday indicates widespread showers and thunderstorms, although Las Vegas and Henderson are expected to see mostly sunny skies for most of the day. High temperatures are projected to reach around 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

As the day progresses, there is a possibility of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms, especially in mountainous regions. Winds are expected to come from the southeast at up to 10 mph, becoming stronger in areas impacted by thunderstorms. Along with flooding potential, frequent lightning is another concern as storms develop.

Meteorological models indicate that the threat of flash flooding is heightened not just in Clark County but also in neighboring areas such as San Bernardino County, where thunderstorms are also expected later in the day. Meanwhile, air quality remains a factor to consider, as it is rated ‘good’ in the morning and shifts to ‘good’ to ‘moderate’ in the afternoon, with specific attention to particulate matter and ozone levels.

Pollen counts are described as ‘moderate’ for tree types including willow, pine, and palm, while weed pollen levels in the valley are classified as ‘high.’

Tonight’s forecast anticipates mostly cloudy skies, with increased chances for showers and thunderstorms continuing into the evening hours. Overnight temperatures in the valley are expected to drop to around 79 degrees. Winds tonight will shift to come from the west, with speeds of up to 10 mph.

The bulk of storm activity is expected to begin around midday on Monday and continue through the evening, with the most significant rain and storm chances occurring after the evening commute and before midnight. The National Weather Service predicts Tuesday to be the most active day for thunderstorms in the Las Vegas area, followed by continued chances for rain on Wednesday, with lesser probabilities on Thursday and Friday.

With valley high temperatures predicted to decrease to the low 90s on Tuesday, a return to triple-digit temperatures is expected by the upcoming weekend. It’s noteworthy that significant rain events in Las Vegas have been sparse recently. The Las Vegas Valley has not recorded substantial rainfall since mid-July, leading to concerns about the prolonged dry spell. The last measurable rain recorded at Harry Reid International Airport happened on May 6, contributing to a total of just 2.05 inches of rain for the year, compared to the typical annual average of 4.18 inches.

In August, the average rainfall is generally around 0.34 inches, indicating a critical need for any precipitation following summer’s heat. Prior to the onset of this unsettled weather pattern, Clark County had been under extreme heat warnings, with temperatures forecasted to remain 5 to 10 degrees above normal. As a precautionary measure, cooling stations across Clark County were activated through Saturday to offer relief during the heat warning period.

As Southern Nevada braces for potentially severe weather conditions over the coming days, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially regarding flash flooding risks and potential storm impacts in the region.
