The aftermath of the explosion involving a rented Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Las Vegas hotel.
An investigation is underway after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded at the Trump Las Vegas hotel, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to seven bystanders. The driver, identified as a former Green Beret, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The vehicle contained fireworks and flammable materials. Authorities are exploring potential links to another deadly incident in New Orleans. Federal agencies are involved, and safety measures have been reinforced at the hotel as the community awaits updates.
The explosion was reported around Thursday afternoon in the 5000 block of Cotton Street, an area near Stewart Avenue and Christy Lane. Initially, fire officials declared the scene active but later confirmed that the reports of additional explosions were unfounded. Nonetheless, investigators are now exploring potential links to a deadly attack that occurred in New Orleans the same day.
Metro Police have identified the driver of the Cybertruck as 34-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, a former Green Beret who had served multiple tours in Afghanistan. Upon investigation, Livelsberger was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with his body burned beyond recognition. An autopsy report revealed the presence of THC, a psychoactive component of marijuana, and benzene, a chemical commonly found in gasoline and paint removers, in his system at the time of death.
Livelsberger’s personal life disclosed troubling factors; his wife reported he was undergoing treatment for PTSD and had recently expressed suicidal thoughts. He returned to the United States from Germany on December 21 and was scheduled to return again on January 5. Just days before the explosion, on December 29, he sent his wife a goodbye email, indicating he was in distress.
The explosion occurred approximately 15 to 20 seconds after the Cybertruck entered the valet area. Following the incident, a load of fireworks, gasoline cans, and camping fuel were discovered in the back of the rented vehicle. The truck, reportedly rented through the Turo app, had been captured by license plate readers during its entry into Las Vegas. Law enforcement officials have stated that the rental platform is cooperating with authorities but have not identified any criminal backgrounds associated with the vehicle’s renters.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are actively involved in investigating the incident, and operations related to the Cybertruck have been reported in Colorado Springs. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has assisted the investigation by unlocking the vehicle and providing video footage of Livelsberger. Sheriff Kevin McMahill has conveyed to the public that local authorities do not believe anyone aided Livelsberger during the incident.
The hotel where the incident took place has underscored its commitment to guest safety, releasing a statement affirming that the well-being of guests and staff is their top priority. Eric Trump, the son of former President Donald Trump, commented on the explosion, emphasizing the safety measures in place at the hotel.
As the investigation continues, President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and has directed federal resources to assist local authorities. Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding the explosion, law enforcement officials maintain that it appears to be an isolated incident posing no ongoing threat to the community.
The increasing scrutiny of rental vehicles and their use highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing safety concerns. As the investigation evolves, authorities aim to provide clarity on the events leading to this devastating incident.
As information emerges, the Las Vegas community remains on alert, awaiting further updates on this troubling situation.
