LAS VEGAS – With the Class 5A Southern Region playoffs set to commence, Trinity Thompson, the senior setter for Bishop Gorman, is on the brink of breaking the Nevada record for career assists. Thompson has currently tallied 4,166 assists and is only 47 assists shy of the state record of 4,212 assists, a mark established by Amy Schlauder of Durango High School from 2000 to 2003.

Bishop Gorman, which is currently the two-time defending Class 5A state champion, is favored to secure a third consecutive title this year. The playoffs will kick off on Monday, with Gorman (recorded at 28-8) entering as the Desert League’s No. 1 seed. The team is set to host Centennial, the No. 4 seed from the Mountain League, in a quarterfinal match scheduled for 6 p.m..

Coach Gregg Nunley recognized Thompson’s potential early in her career, recalling a moment during her freshman year when she confidently stated her role in the game. Although Thompson shared setting duties with another player her freshman season, she still managed to achieve 732 assists, assisting the Gaels in reaching the state semifinals. Her progression continued in her sophomore year with 1,132 assists, leading Gorman to win its first state title, and she followed up with an impressive 1,216 assists in her junior year, culminating in a second championship.

Coach Nunley described Thompson’s growth as “trial by fire,” emphasizing the mental strength required to run the team’s offense. Thompson also shared that she strives to maintain a calm demeanor during high-pressure situations, which she believes positively influences her teammates. Her self-management skills in controlling the offense have garnered praise from her coach, highlighting her capability to call her own sets while working with an array of talented players.

Thompson became aware of her pursuit of the assist record after her mother and the mother of her teammate, Ayanna Watson, informed her about its significance. She expressed that breaking the record while winning another championship would be the perfect culmination of her four years at Bishop Gorman, deeming it the “icing on the cake.”

Looking ahead, Nunley plans to highlight Thompson’s achievements in future speeches, setting her as an example of the standards established by previous players within the program. As Bishop Gorman gears up for the Class 5A Southern Region playoffs, they will face formidable opponents including Liberty, Faith Lutheran, Arbor View, and Coronado.
