Tropicana Avenue and I-15 Interchange Reopens After Reconstruction

News Summary

The Tropicana Avenue and Interstate 15 interchange in Las Vegas has reopened after a nearly full-day closure for reconstruction. The project, known as ‘Dropicana’, enhances traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest routes. With four lanes in each direction now operational, improvements include wider off-ramps and an updated on-ramp system. Although most lanes are back in service, some turn lanes remain restricted. The $382 million upgrades aim to accommodate increasing commuter and tourist traffic, benefiting local businesses and visitors.

Las Vegas – The Tropicana Avenue and Interstate 15 interchange reopened at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, after a nearly full-day closure due to ongoing reconstruction. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) confirmed the reopening following the completion of essential striping and calibration of traffic signals in the area.

The interchange is now functioning at near-full capacity with four lanes in each direction on Tropicana Avenue from Polaris Avenue to Las Vegas Boulevard. This significant improvement comes after a project started back in 2022, nicknamed “Dropicana,” aimed at enhancing the infrastructure in the bustling resort corridor.

The extensive reconstruction efforts have required numerous lane closures and temporary traffic configurations over the past three years, resulting in considerable delays for motorists. In addition to the updated configurations, the project included wider off-ramps from northbound I-15 and a new on-ramp to southbound I-15 to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

While most lanes have reopened, it is important to note that turn lanes from Tropicana to both northbound and southbound I-15 remain restricted to one lane due to ongoing work on the median. The southbound flyover ramp to eastbound Tropicana has been expanded to accommodate two lanes, though the I-15 southbound on-ramp to Tropicana Avenue is still operating at reduced capacity.

This $382 million project aims to improve traffic flow not only for local commuters but also for the increasing volume of visitors traveling to and from key attractions in the area. Local officials have expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the interchange upgrades, which are designed to better serve residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has highlighted the interchange’s significance as a critical gateway to the south Strip, connecting travelers to major destinations including Allegiant Stadium and Harry Reid International Airport. As the area continues to grow, these enhancements are expected to have a lasting positive impact on traffic management.

Looking ahead, future construction plans include the expansion of I-15 between Hacienda and Harmon avenues, with repaving efforts scheduled for July. The project encompasses not only the interchange but also additional road improvements, including the reconfiguration of Dean Martin Drive and the integration of Joey Bishop Drive into the modified traffic landscape.

Moreover, access to significant thoroughfares such as Frank Sinatra Drive and Arena Drive has been improved as part of the ongoing upgrades, all designed with the aim of enhancing travel efficiency in one of the nation’s most vibrant tourist hubs.

Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about the project’s status and upcoming construction plans by utilizing NDOT’s communication channels. Regular updates will help drivers navigate potential delays as work continues to further enhance the infrastructure in Las Vegas.
