International students at UNLV studying together

News Summary

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has reactivated the SEVIS records of seven international students after their visas were revoked. This significant development follows the termination of their SEVIS records due to federal immigration actions connected to their participation in protests. While the records are active, the previously revoked F-1 visas remain invalid, leaving the students in need of new visas to re-enter the U.S. UNLV continues to support these students during this uncertain time.

Las Vegas – The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has reactivated the SEVIS records of seven international students whose visas were previously revoked by federal immigration authorities. The reactivation was announced earlier this week by UNLV’s Office of International Student & Scholar Compliance and marks a significant development in a tense situation for students affected by visa terminations related to their participation in protests.

The reactivation occurred after the SEVIS records of these students had been terminated in early April 2025 due to visa revocations. Initially, four students were impacted, followed by an additional three later in the month. On April 24, a number of colleges and universities across the U.S. began witnessing previously terminated SEVIS records returning to active status, which included all seven students from UNLV.

UNLV’s monitoring of the federal database revealed the changes in SEVIS records. However, as of the announcement, the university had not received official guidance or communication from the Department of Homeland Security regarding these reactivations. The institution is actively supporting the affected students, facilitating necessary resources and guidance to help ensure they meet the academic requirements for the ongoing spring semester.

It is important to note that while the SEVIS records have been reactivated, any F-1 visa that was revoked remains invalid. This situation means that students will need to apply for a new visa to re-enter the United States. UNLV remains uncertain about the Department of State’s plans to reinstate any F-1 visas that were revoked in April, leaving the situation in limbo for the impacted students, who comprise both undergraduate and graduate individuals, as well as employees on Optional Practical Training (OPT).

The university has acknowledged that there is no clear pattern to the visa terminations, raising concerns about the privacy and safety of the students involved. UNLV is collaborating with the Nevada System of Higher Education and state officials to advocate for the rights and well-being of students affected by the recent visa revocations.

Background of Visa Revocations

Federal visa revocations have emerged as part of a broader governmental response to international student involvement in protests, especially related to support for Palestine amidst ongoing conflicts. Recent scrutiny from the U.S. Department of State and other federal agencies has linked the visa statuses of foreign students with perceived noncompliance relating to these protests, further intensifying the concerns surrounding international students at U.S. institutions.

Resources and Support

To aid students and faculty navigating these challenges, UNLV’s Immigration Clinic continues to provide free immigration legal services to students, staff, and their families. This initiative is particularly crucial during a time when uncertainty looms over the international student community, as officials and faculty remain committed to offering resources and guidance in light of the recent developments.

The future remains uncertain for the affected students as UNLV advocates on their behalf while maintaining efforts to support their academic journeys. The university’s proactive approach aims to ensure that students can continue their education despite the ongoing challenges they face with their visa statuses.
