Keith Whitfield has resigned from his position as President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, effective immediately. His departure follows challenges during his tenure, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a tragic shooting incident. Relationships with faculty and donors had reportedly deteriorated, contributing to his resignation. Under Whitfield, UNLV experienced an increase in student enrollment, but criticisms arose regarding campus safety and donor engagement. Christopher Heavey has been appointed as the interim president as the university navigates this leadership transition.
Las Vegas, NV – Keith Whitfield has resigned as President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), effective immediately. His departure was announced during the UNLV Foundation’s annual dinner, where he cited the need to devote more time to his family, specifically his mother and grandson, who are facing health challenges.
Whitfield has been at the helm of UNLV since August 2020, a period marked by significant challenges, including navigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and dealing with a tragic shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of three faculty members. His resignation comes just one year after the Nevada Board of Regents extended his contract for four additional years and increased his salary by $65,000, bringing it to $565,000.
Faculty members within the university expressed that Whitfield’s resignation followed months of deteriorating relationships between him, certain donors, and the Nevada Board of Regents. Critics attribute his departure to this strained dynamic, which had been growing increasingly tense.
Whitfield made history as UNLV’s first Black president. His tenure was focused on improving student enrollment and enhancing campus safety measures. Notably, under his leadership, UNLV saw a nearly 6% increase in enrollment, reaching a record high of almost 40,000 students for the fall of 2024. Following the shooting incident in December 2023, Whitfield implemented enhanced mental health support for both students and staff as part of efforts to bolster campus safety.
The legacy of Whitfield’s presidency appears to be mixed. While some stakeholders praised his navigational skills during crises, others criticized his handling of safety concerns and donor relationships. The former President of the UNLV Faculty Senate highlighted Whitfield’s inadequate response to the December shooting and a lack of commitment to necessary security improvements.
Significantly, notable donor Kris Engelstad severed ties with UNLV, citing poor behavior from university leadership and a lack of engagement with donors during Whitfield’s presidency. Financial support from donors appears to have diminished, with the university receiving approximately $53 million annually, a sharp decline compared to the pre-Whitfield average of around $75 million.
Relations with the Board of Regents also faced scrutiny, particularly over UNLV’s substantial budgetary reserves. Whitfield was criticized for not utilizing these funds effectively to benefit students, which contributed to tensions with the Board. Such frustrations have not been uncommon in the recent history of UNLV leadership, which has seen significant turnover. In the last two decades, the university has had seven presidents, while the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has seen only five in a similar timeframe.
In light of Whitfield’s resignation, the Nevada System of Higher Education is taking steps to appoint a new acting or interim president. Christopher Heavey, who serves as the Executive Vice President and Provost at UNLV, has been named the officer in charge during this transitional period.
This leadership change at UNLV reflects ongoing challenges within higher education and the complexities of university governance, particularly in a rapidly evolving academic landscape. The Board of Regents indicated that transitions in leadership typically arise from planned retirements or expected changes as leaders finish their terms.
