Xavier Women’s Golf Team Advances in NCAA Columbus Regional

News Summary

The Xavier women’s golf team is competing in the NCAA Columbus Regional, aiming to secure a spot in the NCAA Championship after winning the Big East Championship. Isabel Brozena led with a second-place finish in the first round, scoring 67. The team, skilled and determined, boasts notable players like Emma Welch, who achieved historic back-to-back Big East titles. Their recent success across various sports highlights Xavier University’s strong athletic program.

Columbus, Ohio – The Xavier women’s golf team is competing in the NCAA Columbus Regional from May 5-7, hosted by Ohio State. This event serves as a pivotal opportunity for the team, as the top five teams along with the top individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship scheduled for May 16-21 in Carlsbad, California.

During the first round of the regional tournament on May 5, Isabel Brozena put forth an impressive performance, finishing second with a score of 67, which is 5 under par. Her contribution has set a strong tone for the team’s objectives in this critical competition.

Prior to participating in the Columbus Regional, the Xavier women’s golf team achieved notable success by winning the Big East Championship for the sixth consecutive year from April 19-21. They secured the title with an impressive 23-stroke lead over Georgetown, marking the largest margin of victory in the last 22 years. This accomplishment highlights the team’s dominance in the conference.

Emma Welch, a standout player on the team, became the first individual to win back-to-back Big East titles, showcasing her skill and determination. After initially struggling and being four over par over the first two days, Welch rallied with an outstanding final round of 4-under par. She finished two strokes ahead of her teammate Madison Reemsnyder, who also performed well, demonstrating the depth of talent within the team.

Kara Carter added to the accolades of the team by finishing third overall at the Big East Championships with a score of 1-over par. Both Isabel Brozena and Eleanor Hudepohl also made significant contributions, finishing in the top eight at the championships. This strong showing by multiple team members reflects the well-rounded nature of Xavier’s roster.

Emma Welch’s performance was particularly impressive, given she had to overcome a wrist injury earlier in the month. The injury led her to adopt a looser grip, which ultimately improved her swing and contributed to her game strategy leading into the championships and regional competition.

Beyond the golf program, Xavier’s athletics have also seen success in other sports. The women’s tennis team claimed its fifth consecutive Big East title by defeating Villanova 4-0 in the finals. Meanwhile, the softball team recently enjoyed a significant victory against UC, scoring eight runs in the second inning and six in the fifth to win 15-6. They achieved a two-game series sweep over UC, following a three-game sweep over Villanova, where they outscored the Wildcats 28-7.

Additionally, Xavier’s baseball team is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation according to RPI standings. With 14 regular-season contests remaining, they are gearing up for the Big East Tournament scheduled for May 21-24.

This ongoing success across multiple sports emphasizes the strong athletic program at Xavier University, with particular attention on the golf team’s quest for advancement in the NCAA tournament. As they compete at the Columbus Regional, the team aims to build on their latest triumphs and secure a place in the national championship.
